YouTube Shorts for business: formats, length and examples

By Kevin Renaud, founder of Biux · Updated 12 September 2026

Updated 12 September 2026: expanded guidance on Shorts classification, production, measurement, visuals and FAQs.

YouTube Shorts are square or vertical videos lasting up to three minutes. For a B2B business, they offer a way to share expertise, explain a product or introduce a person without asking viewers for a large time commitment. A vertical 9:16 composition makes good use of a phone screen, and 1080 × 1920 pixels provides a Full HD production canvas. These are practical export choices, not a reason to use the full available running time. The three-minute limit is set out in YouTube’s official Shorts documentation. Start with a specific question your buyer actually asks, then give an answer that makes sense on its own. One interview can supply several clips, provided each is written and edited as a complete piece. Define the business objective before choosing the speaker, the message and the next step for viewers. Views alone will not tell you whether the format is helping your business.

Shorts format and duration

Think about the destination when framing the shot. Someone placed close to the edge of a landscape image may disappear in a vertical crop. Leave space for subtitles without covering the face or the demonstration. The table separates documented platform limits from recommended production choices. Posting frequency depends on your resources; it is not a technical specification.

Setting Reference What it means
Maximum duration 3 minutes Shorts limit
Accepted orientation Square or vertical Classification rule
Recommended aspect ratio 9:16 Production choice
Recommended dimensions 1080 × 1920 pixels Full HD vertical export
Container MP4 YouTube recommendation
Video codec H.264 YouTube recommendation
Title Up to 100 characters Publishing limit
File size and frame rate Check before uploading Depends on the export and account

For your export, consult YouTube’s recommended encoding settings to check the container, codec and frame rate. Keep the original filming frame rate unless there is a specific reason to change it. Do not treat a file-size limit for an advert or another platform as a universal Shorts rule. Test the finished file before the planned publication date.

How YouTube classifies a video as a Short

For a standard business channel, a square or vertical video of up to three minutes uploaded from 15 October 2024 is classified as a Short. The previous limit was 60 seconds. Classification therefore depends on the file and upload date, not simply on including “Short” in the title. YouTube explains this in its three-minute Shorts guidance.

For full-screen vertical viewing, design a 9:16 composition at 1080 × 1920 pixels. Square video is also accepted, but uses the screen differently. Both MP4 and MOV are among YouTube’s accepted file formats. Choosing a container does not replace a framing check: the face, demonstration and subtitles still need to be readable.

Advice from Kevin Renaud, founder of Biux

“I write the opening once the answer is clear. I keep a sentence that identifies the prospect’s actual problem, followed by a demonstration. In the edit, I remove the detours, not the details that make the answer credible.”

How long should a Short be?

Try 15 to 30 seconds for a simple answer viewers can follow through to the end. This can work for an objection, an action or a single idea; it is not a universally winning length. YouTube considers both watch time and the proportion viewed, and recommends matching length to the content. Cutting essential evidence just to make a video shorter can make the message less useful.

A story can run for up to three minutes when every section adds something the viewer needs. Read the retention curve alongside the moments when the explanation moves forward. A drop during a general introduction suggests getting to the point sooner. A drop during a demonstration may mean the explanation is missing a step.

The Shorts algorithm: retention, swiping and repeat exposure

In the Shorts feed, viewers can watch or immediately move on. Make the subject clear from the opening. A precise question and an understandable image give someone a reason to stay. A polished corporate introduction does not necessarily perform that job.

YouTube describes several Shorts recommendation signals : choosing to watch, average viewing duration, percentage viewed and satisfaction. Recommendations are also personalised. Further exposure does not follow a guaranteed timetable, so avoid deleting a video solely because its initial view count is modest.

Create a Short in six steps

  1. Choose the idea. Start with a question your prospects really ask and write the intended answer in one sentence.
  2. Write the hook. Identify the problem without making an exaggerated promise. The rest of the video must fulfil that opening.
  3. Film vertically. Leave room around the face and the object being shown. Capture clear speech and shots that support the explanation.
  4. Edit and subtitle. Remove repetition while retaining important qualifications. Check names, technical terms and any figures on screen.
  5. Write the title and description. Name the subject clearly. Relevant words help people understand the content; piling them up does not guarantee a ranking.
  6. Publish and check. Watch the result on a phone, verify audio rights and record the purpose of the post before assessing its performance.

How can you produce Shorts during a shoot?

Prepare the questions before booking your shoot. For each topic, record the intended answer, the evidence to show and the closing thought. The speaker can use their own words, but needs to know which point to complete. A long, unstructured conversation can produce plenty of footage and surprisingly few usable clips.

During recording, look for self-contained answers. Clarify vague pronouns and repeat statements that depend on an off-camera question. In the edit, remove repetition rather than the qualifications needed to understand the answer. Proofread subtitles and clear speech matter more than a collection of effects.

The Biux personal branding package includes 10 videos, with subtitles, for €2,500 excl. VAT. It provides a coherent series built around your expertise and your prospects’ questions. Topics and deliverables are agreed with your team before production.

Five Shorts series ideas for a B2B business

  • Expertise: one prospect question, a reasoned answer and a concrete example.
  • Behind the scenes: one preparation task and an explanation of why it matters to the result.
  • Product: one specific use case, shown from its starting point to the completed action.
  • Recruitment: someone explains a real part of their work instead of reciting a job description.
  • Events: one idea from a presentation, with enough context for people who were not there.

Which Shorts topics interest B2B decision-makers?

A buyer is not necessarily looking for an introduction to your company. They may want to understand a difficulty, compare approaches or avoid a mistake. Turn those questions into focused topics: what holds up a migration, what a quote should include, or how different product uses compare.

To demonstrate expertise, ask a specialist to explain a concrete decision. For recruitment, let an employee describe an observable work situation. For software, show a useful action on screen. Avoid broad promises that could apply to any business.

Each clip should make sense outside the series. Explain the problem before introducing an acronym. Keep one call to action that suits the viewer’s level of interest. An immediate quote request is not always the natural next step after a first introduction. This approach supports a B2B short-form content strategy, without replacing material that explains your offer in depth.

Seven mistakes that weaken a Short

  • Opening with a long logo animation before establishing the subject.
  • Packing in several competing messages.
  • Promising an answer the video never delivers.
  • Placing subtitles underneath the interface buttons.
  • Keeping hard-to-understand audio despite a polished edit.
  • Automatically cropping a demonstration so important details fall outside the frame.
  • Treating a view count as a business result.

Measurement: four useful indicators

  • Retention: look at where viewers leave and ask what information is missing at that point.
  • Choosing to watch rather than swipe: compare openings, without confusing this measure with thumbnail click-through rate.
  • Subscribers gained: identify subjects that make people want to hear from you again.
  • Website visits: use a profile link you can identify in your analytics and follow the journey to a relevant enquiry.

The URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable. Direct viewers to the channel profile or a related video that develops the subject. Website attribution remains a separate measure from video views.

How do you measure Shorts beyond views?

Write a title that accurately describes the subject. Check audio, subtitles and confidentiality before publication. The Shorts creation documentation explains the upload process. It also states that, since 31 March 2025, views count starts and replays without a minimum watch-time requirement.

Use engaged views and retention alongside the headline count to understand audience interest. Compare videos with similar objectives. A recruitment clip and a product explanation should not be judged solely by the same counter. Record relevant enquiries and the subjects prospects bring up again.

Decide what a result will help you do: continue a topic, change the hook or make the answer clearer. For editorial length, our guide to business video duration starts with the objective. Being allowed three minutes does not mean you need to fill three minutes.

Should you duplicate Shorts across Reels and TikTok?

You can create a shared vertical master, but using the same file does not remove the need to check each publication. Review subtitles in the actual interface. Adapt the cover, accompanying copy and call to action. Make sure music rights cover each intended use as well.

Channel Editorial question Pre-publication check
YouTube Shorts Which question will you answer? Fit with the channel
Instagram Reels Which side of the brand will you show? Cover and profile preview
TikTok Which angle would interest this audience? Context and audio rights

Choose channels around your audience’s habits and the subjects you can cover consistently. Do not open multiple accounts without deciding who will answer comments and review feedback. If your audience is active mainly on one platform, test your topics there first. Then adapt the Shorts that generate relevant questions. Distribution should follow your buyers’ behaviour, not the number of export presets in your editing software.

Examples: three short-form videos produced by Biux

These vertical talking-head videos were produced by Biux. Notice how each speaker develops a self-contained idea, using framing and pacing suited to short-form viewing. The examples offer practical starting points for your own topics.

5000.dev: structuring an expert answer

This short-form video for 5000.dev runs for 129 seconds according to Vimeo’s metadata. Notice how one person can develop a subject without changing speakers. For your own series, the useful lesson is to build an answer that stands alone, even when it comes from a longer recording session.

5000.dev explains which questions to ask before a technical project in 2 minutes 9 seconds. The talking-head format illustrates a structured answer.

0:00 problem · 0:15 questions to ask · 1:53 summary

AXA: making expertise accessible

In this short-form example for AXA, the video lasts 36 seconds. Notice the emphasis on the face and spoken explanation. For a service business, this is a reminder to make the answer clear before looking for an elaborate visual treatment.

AXA addresses a misconception about life insurance in 36 seconds. The dialogue shows how an objection can lead into a concise explanation.

Mobile Club: giving the brand a voice

This 87-second example featuring Mobile Club offers another approach to vertical talking-head video. Focus on how the person carries the message. For your own content, aim for a recognisable point of view rather than an impersonal sales pitch.

Mobile Club contrasts two views of entrepreneurship in 1 minute 27 seconds. A person-led argument illustrates expertise rather than a product announcement.

FAQ: YouTube Shorts for businesses

How long can YouTube Shorts be?

Eligible Shorts can last up to three minutes. The right editorial length still depends on the answer you need to give. Cut repetition and retain essential explanations. Start with a straightforward topic, then test a more developed treatment without artificially extending every clip in the series.

Can a Short be reused on TikTok and Instagram?

Yes, provided you hold the necessary rights and the file meets the destination’s requirements. A vertical 9:16 master makes adaptation easier. Still check areas hidden by the interface, the cover, subtitles and music. Permission for one platform should never be assumed to cover every other use.

Do you need an established YouTube channel?

You need a channel to publish, but not a history of long-form videos. Introduce the business clearly and organise the information visitors need. Prepare a coherent set of topics before launch. The first series should make your expertise understandable even to someone encountering the brand for the first time.

How many Shorts should a business publish each month?

There is no universal quota that suits every business. Choose a pace you can sustain with useful topics and genuine follow-up. The Biux personal branding package includes 10 videos. You can schedule them around your editorial calendar and the questions that come up in conversations with prospects.

Can a Short appear in Google search?

Yes. A video can appear when Google indexes it and considers it relevant to the query. Google’s video SEO recommendations distinguish the page from the video itself. A clear title, an accessible thumbnail and a dedicated page help people and search engines understand and discover the subject.

Can a Short earn advertising revenue?

Yes. A channel accepted into the YouTube Partner Programme can participate in Shorts feed revenue sharing after accepting the relevant monetisation module. The content must comply with platform rules. Publishing a Short does not automatically generate payment, and the view count alone does not determine the amount earned. Source: YouTube.

How is a Short different from a standard YouTube video?

A Short is classified by its orientation, duration and publication date. It can be discovered in a dedicated feed where viewers quickly move to the next item. Standard videos offer a different viewing context. For a business, a Short answers a focused question, while a longer video can develop the demonstration.

Can you watch Shorts without installing an app?

Yes. Shorts are also available on the YouTube website in a browser. A mobile app is not required to open a Short link. Still design for a small screen: the text, voice and framing should remain easy to understand during a quick viewing session on a phone. Source: YouTube.
